Fremont Real Estate
Fremont is a unique and highly desirable neighborhood of Seattle. It is just east of Ballard and is bordered to the south with the Fremont Cut of the Lake Washington Ship Canal. While it was originally a separate city, it was annexed into Seattle in 1891. About a decade ago, this area was known as the “The Artist’s Republic of Fremont,” and is still considered a hub for counterculture and art. However, unlike some other hip centers of Seattle, the residents of Fremont have stayed and gotten a little older, and the place is now distinctly kid-friendly and family oriented. It is also known for being extremely dog friendly- some statistics say that there are just as many dogs as people in Fremont! The unofficial motto of Fremont is, “De Libertas Quirkas,” which means, “Freedom to be peculiar.” This is reflected in the people, the shops, the restaurants, the sculptures, the festivals, and the homes. A few famous local sculptures include the 18-foot concrete Troll under the bridge, (depicted crushing a Volkswagen), and the famous aluminum sculpture called Waiting for the Interurban. Fremont is particularly famous for its Fremont Summer Solstice Parade, which has grown in twenty years to bring in thousands and thousands of spectators. Hundreds of participants build wildly creative non-motorized floats to enter in the parade every year. The festival also features dance groups, circus acts, music troupes, ensembles and the parade is unofficially opened every year by approximately 400 nude (but body painted) cyclists.
Fremont Homes and Condos
Homes in Fremont are the funkiest around. The area is covered in multi-level family homes, but there are also several brand new condominiums as the area becomes steadily more popular. The houses and condos are extremely child and dog friendly. Fremont homes are known to be slightly more expensive than other bohemian parts of town- like the University District, for example. Homes in Fremont are especially eco-friendly, and many have views of the Ship Canal or spectacular views of Seattle. The area, while thoroughly urbanized, is surprisingly green. The trees are lush and thick, and the homes often have large, luxurious gardens. The community of Fremont is one of the friendliest around, and is highly popular for artistic youths, families with kids who love the arts, and retired, but active folks. It is just across the Canal from downtown Seattle, just a mere 5 minute drive away. Bus lines go directly to the University and downtown, and both have great access by bike. The largest grocery store in the area is the PCC Natural Market, which is a huge Seattle-based food cooperative that focuses on organic, local foods. There are some Fremont homes that are right on the Burke-Gilman trail, the 27-mile interurban bike/jogging trail that traverses Seattle. If you want a classy, bohemian and arts-focused neighborhood to live in for the rest of your life, Fremont is the place for you.
